Vintage Ceramiques Elchinger pottery dish
This exquisite dish from the 1960’s is crafted by Ceramiques Elchinger in the shape of an artist’s palette, and has a really lovely mid-century look. It is in pristine condition and has the dimensions of approximately 12.5cm x 12.5cm. It features a smooth, gently textured, mottled white on black glaze, with vibrant red ribbed circular splodges. On the base it still bears the paper label of the company.
Ceramiques Elchinger was a renowned family-owned manufacturer in Souffleheim in Alsace, France. The business was originally a tile factory founded in 1792 by Michel Elchinger, transformed into a pottery by his son Wendelin in 1834. From then on six further generations of the family ran the business. In the first half of the twentieth century the factory was led by Leon Elchinger (1871 - 1942) a pioneer in the field of artistic ceramics. At the time this charming piece produced, his son Fernand had taken over and modernised the operation. The company closed its doors in 2016 after more than 200 years of production.
