1960s Vintage Combined Optical Industries Magnifying Lens mounted on Eclipse Cat. No. 903 Magnetic Base
A brilliantly practical and beautifully made piece of 1960s British industrial equipment.
This large rectangular magnifying lens is marked Combined Optical Industries Ltd, Slough, Buckinghamshire, England. It measures approx. 12.5cm wide, 9.5cm high and 3.5cm deep, and offers clear, strong magnification. The lens is mounted on a fully adjustable joint that allows it to rotate and tilt for perfect positioning — ideal for close work such as jewellery making, model building, or any detailed craft.
The steel mounting arm measures 21.5cm long (including the fitting) and is held securely in place with a chunky thumbscrew. The base is a wonderfully solid Eclipse magnetic base, Cat. No. 903, made in Sheffield. It has a red enamel front plate with a push-button mechanism to activate or release the magnet. The base measures approx. 4cm wide, 5cm deep and 5cm high.
A superbly functional piece with strong mid-century industrial character. Great for a maker’s studio, collector’s shelf, or as a distinctive bit of vintage decor.
