Beautiful 1970s Ukrainian porcelain figurine titled ‘May Night’, designed by Vladislav Shcherbina for the ZHK Polonne Porcelain Factory.

The piece is based on Nikolai Gogol’s romantic tale of the same name and shows a young couple standing together, dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing. The modelling is full of character, and the hand-painted decoration in cream, russet, blue and red gives it warmth and movement.

A lovely example of mid-20th-century Ukrainian porcelain design, combining folk art charm with expressive sculptural form.
