A beautifully worn antique Chinese carved wood ancestor figure of a seated scholar official, thought to be early 19th century, possibly earlier.

He has a calm, contemplative expression, with heavy-lidded downcast eyes and the faintest smile. He wears a tall two-tiered hat. His robe has broad, dark-painted lapels meeting at a round clasp on his chest, and long, generous sleeves. A carved sash tied in a bow sits on the arched panel between his knees.

In his right hand he holds a small rectangular object, perhaps a seal or tablet. His left hand cradles a cylindrical vessel, with the fingers carefully carved beneath it. His feet rest on a plain stepped base.

Most of the original paint has worn away over generations of handling, incense smoke and candlelight. The warm, silvery bare wood is left with traces of red lacquer, gilt and dark pigment, especially to the collar, sleeves, sides and back. It has a lovely soft, sculptural quality as a result.

Figures like this represented honoured ancestors, often shown in official dress as a mark of status. They sat on the family altar and received offerings of incense, food and prayers. On his back is a rectangular consecration cavity, framed in red lacquer, where sacred items were once sealed in to "enliven" the figure. The cavity is now open and empty. The back of the seat is carved with two rounded hollows.

Condition: Commensurate with age and altar use. Most of the original paint and lacquer has been lost, with only traces remaining. There is an old vertical age split to the upper tier of the hat, a small loss to its edge, and wear to the facial features. General surface wear, rubbing and small losses throughout. The consecration cavity is open and empty. Stable and displays beautifully. Please see photos as part of the description.
