A well-made and characterful antique folding table, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period. Practical, sturdy, and full of honest age, this is the kind of piece that works as hard in a contemporary interior as it would have done in its original setting — as a writing table, side table, or portable occasional table.

The top is formed from three planks of softwood, rounded at the corners, with a dark stained finish that has developed a rich patina over many decades of use. The surface carries significant wear — scratches, scuffs, minor splits along the board joins, and some old nail and screw fixings visible — all consistent with age and working life, and clearly photographed. It is a surface with genuine history rather than a pristine one.

The base is the more appealing element: four turned legs with decorative notched rings at intervals, stained dark, set into an X-frame scissor action that allows the table to fold flat. The legs are joined by two horizontal stretcher rails on each side, the turning carried consistently throughout. The folding mechanism uses original wooden block joints at the crossing point, and the table locks open with an original wooden catch on the underside, which retains a fragment of old thick fabric nailed around it — a period detail that speaks to the table’s working history. The underside of the top retains its original dark stained finish.

Folding tables of this construction were widely made in Britain from the 1880s through the Edwardian era, used variously as reading tables, sketching tables, or portable work surfaces. This example is larger and more substantial than most, giving it real presence and genuine utility.
