Antique Shield-Shaped Photograph Case with Portrait – Late Victorian / Edwardian, c.1880–1910
A rare and unusual antique photograph case in the shape of a shield, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period (c.1880–1910).
Covered in textured green leather with a soft velvet surround and gilt metal mount, the case houses an oval portrait of a bearded gentleman with walking stick, possibly taken as a mourning photograph (the background appears to show a cemetery). The case has a hinged top and a clasp at the bottom, though it no longer opens — quite common in pieces of this age, where the fabric and fittings have fused with time.
Shield-shaped examples are much scarcer than the usual rectangular or oval photograph cases, making this a fascinating collectible for those interested in Victorian photography, mourning memorabilia, or antique portraiture.
