A wonderfully characterful antique Victorian cash box in japanned toleware — black lacquered metal with mustard yellow and ochre decoration, twin brass knob handles to the lid and warm tan rolled-edge banding around the body. The interior bears the original maker’s stamp in gold: “The London Cash Box — Sole Makers: Henry Loveridge & Co” within a decorative diamond cartouche — a mark of one of Victorian Birmingham’s most celebrated metalware manufacturers.
The box features a brass keyhole escutcheon to the front, a pull-out coin tray with open/close mechanism inside, and comes with its original barrel key on a brass tag. The lock mechanism does not currently function, but the box opens freely and is fully intact structurally. Paint wear and chipping is present consistent with its age — all of which adds to the patina and authenticity of this lovely piece.
Henry Loveridge & Co were based in Wolverhampton and were prolific manufacturers of japanned tinware throughout the Victorian era. Their cash boxes are highly collectible.
