Chinoiserie Style Red & Gold Painted Side Table, Early 20th Century — Dragonfly & Botanical Decoration, Faux Bamboo Legs
A really pretty decorative side table in the Chinoiserie manner, dating to the early 20th century. The piece is painted throughout in a rich crimson red with gilt detailing, and the overall effect is warm, striking, and highly decorative.
The rectangular top is painted red with a gilded edge and decorated with hand-painted or transfer-applied Chinoiserie motifs: a flowing botanical stem with pointed leaves, two dragonflies in gold, and a small butterfly — all rendered in gilt on the red ground. The apron beneath the top is decorated with a repeating gilt diamond lattice pattern on a red field, a classic Chinoiserie device.
The four legs are turned in a faux bamboo style, painted red with horizontal gold bands at the joints — a form strongly associated with the Regency period and its revivals in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. The legs are joined by two H-shaped stretcher rails at the base, with a central turned spindle connecting them, all in matching red and gold. The feet rest on simple curved bracket bases.
The condition is consistent with age and use. The tabletop surface shows light surface scratches and some wear to the gilded edge, clearly visible in our photographs. The decoration and structure are otherwise sound. This is a characterful piece that would work well in a maximalist, eclectic, or classically decorated interior.
