Crawford's Biscuit Tin c.1925, Bronze Effect Casket, Classical Horsemen
A Crawford's biscuit tin from around 1925, made in the form of a neoclassical casket and finished to imitate patinated bronze.
The hinged lid is embossed with a procession of classical horsemen in the manner of the Parthenon frieze. It is set within a stepped panel and bordered with laurel sprays. All four sides are embossed with festoons of fruit and leaves hung from ribbon bows, with pendant tassels and crossed trumpets. The casket rests on a deep ogee moulded base raised on four bracket feet. The inside of the lid is gilt.
The base is embossed with the Royal Arms, "By Appointment", "Crawford's Delightful Biscuits and Shortbread" and "Crawford's Ginger Nuts are outstanding". Crawford's was the Edinburgh biscuit maker famed for its decorative tins, many designed to be kept as keepsake boxes once the biscuits were gone.
