Fossil Fish – Knightia – Eocene Epoch – Green River Formation, Wyoming – c.50 Million Years Old
A genuine and beautifully preserved fossil fish, Knightia sp., from the world-famous Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA. Dating to the Eocene epoch approximately 50 million years ago, this extinct genus of herring-like fish is one of the most commonly found vertebrate fossils in North America — yet each specimen is a genuinely thrilling object, a perfect snapshot of ancient life locked in stone.
This example is preserved in a pale cream limestone/shale matrix, with the full body of the fish clearly visible — spine, ribs, fins, scales and skull all beautifully defined in warm rust-brown mineral tones. The detail is exceptional, with the dorsal and pectoral fins, lateral line and individual vertebrae all clearly discernible.
The Green River Formation was once a vast network of subtropical freshwater lakes, and the fine-grained sediment that settled at its bottom created ideal conditions for extraordinary fossil preservation. Knightia specimens from this deposit are collected legally and have been traded internationally for decades.
A wonderful natural history piece — ideal as a display object, educational specimen, or an unusual and genuinely ancient gift.
