A rare and original example of post-war West German toy manufacturing at its finest. This Gescha R-558 tinplate Porsche 356 friction car was made in Western Germany in the 1950s, during the golden era of European tin toy production. Gescha — the company that would later evolve into Conrad, still one of the world’s leading precision model manufacturers — produced a range of Porsche-inspired toys during this period, and the R-558 is among the most sought after by collectors today.
The car measures 24cm in length and 9.5cm in width and retains its original coral red paint with honest age-related wear. The chrome-effect headlights, grille, and bumper surround remain intact, as do the original Gescha maker’s labels on both front and rear axle clips — a detail frequently missing on surviving examples. The rubber tyres are original and present on all four wheels.
Most notably, the bump-and-reverse friction mechanism remains functional: when the car meets an obstacle, it automatically reverses direction — a feature that delighted children of the 1950s and remains a talking point for collectors today. The green and yellow licence plate reads R-558 Made in Western Germany.
Condition: played-with, with surface rust to the bumper and base trim and light paint wear consistent with age. Structurally sound with no missing components.
A compelling piece for any serious tin toy or Porsche collector.
Dimensions: 24cm x 9.5cm
