A substantial and impressive Victorian chromolithograph portrait of Queen Victoria in a large oval carved mahogany frame with glass. A piece of genuine historical significance, almost certainly produced to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee of 1897 — the most widely celebrated moment of her reign.

The portrait depicts Victoria in three-quarter profile facing left, wearing her small diamond crown, a lace veil, and her Garter robes with the characteristic blue sash. She wears a drop pearl and gold earring and a pearl collar necklace. Her regalia is shown in detail: a jewelled bar brooch on her chest, and prominently displayed at her bodice, the Royal Victorian Order badge with a profile cameo medallion surmounted by a crown — the image of Prince Albert in profile is clearly depicted on the medal, a poignant memorial touch that Victoria wore throughout her widowhood. A second order badge, cross-shaped and topped with a crowned cipher, is also visible.

The chromolithograph itself is of high quality, with finely rendered detail in the lace, embroidery, and flesh tones. There is some toning and age spotting to the image, consistent with its age.

The frame is oval mahogany with a wide outer border carved in relief with a repeating acorn and leaf motif, and an inner beaded detail. The glass appears to be a later replacement rather than original. There is some surface wear and minor cracking to the carved frame moulding, clearly visible in our photographs. The reverse retains its original brown paper backing, now aged and partially torn, with a black cord hanging system.

A commanding piece of Victoriana that works as well in a contemporary interior as it does in a period setting.

Dimensions: 59cm high × 49cm wide (overall frame)

Condition: As found. Frame wear and some cracking to carved sections. Image has age toning. Glass likely a later replacement. Photographed honestly throughout.
