Philip's 9 Inch Terrestrial Globe, c.1920s, Ebonised Base
An early 20th century Philip's 9 inch terrestrial globe by George Philip & Son Ltd, London Geographical Institute, 32 Fleet Street, London. It stands on its original ebonised turned wooden base.
The globe is printed in colour, with the British Empire shown in its traditional red. It shows warm and cold ocean currents and principal steamship routes, with distances in nautical miles. The political detail dates it to around the 1920s. It shows the Japanese and Australian Pacific mandates created after the First World War, alongside Persia, Siam, the Dominion of Canada, Manchuria and Nicholas II Land in the Arctic, all names that later changed.
The sphere turns freely within a brass half meridian with ball finials. It is raised on a baluster-turned ebonised column above a stepped circular base, and the underside has a green baize protective base.
