Set of 4 Antique Fischel Bentwood Bistro Chairs, Early 20th Century, Czech — Art Nouveau Cafe Dining Chairs
A rare matched set of four bentwood bistro chairs by Fischel, one of the foremost Austro-Czech furniture manufacturers and a direct rival to Thonet. Each chair bears the original Fischel brand stamp, confirming authenticity and provenance.
Produced in the early twentieth century — most likely between 1910 and 1930 — these chairs are exemplary of the Vienna Secession and Art Nouveau tradition of bentwood furniture. The frames are constructed from steam-bent beechwood in a deep espresso finish, with the characteristic saber legs, circular hoop stretcher, and original brass bolt hardware at the seat joints. Both the round slatted seats and the wide fan-shaped slatted backrests retain their warm honey-toned finish, displaying the distinctive striped pattern associated with Fischel’s café and bistro seating.
The set presents in good original condition commensurate with age. The frames are structurally sound. Surface wear including light scratches, minor scuffs to the leg ends, and patina consistent with a century of use is present throughout, contributing to the authentic character of the pieces. No repairs or re-finishing have been carried out.
Bentwood cafe chairs of this type were produced for use in the grand coffee houses and bistros of Central Europe. They remain highly collectible and are equally at home around a kitchen or dining table, in a restaurant setting, or as decorative accent pieces. A complete matched set of four with confirmed maker’s marks is increasingly difficult to source.
