A 1958 Detgiz edition of Pozhar, a children’s collection of short stories and fables by Leo Tolstoy, published in Leningrad. The book includes Two Companions, Tolstoy’s enduring moral fable about loyalty and cowardice in the face of danger, alongside several other short pieces written in his characteristically spare and powerful prose.

What sets this copy apart is its illustration work — pencil and charcoal drawings of considerable skill and drama, capturing peasant life, maternal tenderness, and moments of fear with equal confidence. A handwritten inscription gifts the book to a child named Masha, mirroring another 1958 Detgiz book in this collection also dedicated to a Masha, raising the intriguing possibility that both this and the book ‘Tak’ we are selling belonged to the same little girl nearly 67 years ago.
