A remarkable survivor from the early days of photography, this Victorian folding plate camera by W. Watson & Sons of High Holborn, London dates to approximately 1860–1870 — a time when photography was still experimental, technical, and wonderfully hands-on.

Crafted from polished mahogany with brass fittings and a concertina bellows, this camera captures the ingenuity and craftsmanship of nineteenth-century photographic equipment. The bellows extend smoothly and remain in good working order, while the rear compartments open correctly and retain a glass plate, offering a glimpse into the original photographic process.

W. Watson & Sons were a respected London scientific instrument maker, supplying optical and photographic equipment during the Victorian era. Cameras like this would have been used for early glass plate photography, requiring careful setup, long exposures, and considerable skill — making them as much scientific instruments as artistic tools.

Today, this piece works beautifully as both a collector’s object and a striking decorative display, perfect for interiors with a vintage, industrial, or academic aesthetic. The included tripod enhances its sculptural presence and makes it an eye-catching talking point in any space.

A wonderful piece of photographic history — tactile, atmospheric, and full of character.
