Vintage 1960s Japanese Tinplate Ambulance Toy Car — Made in Japan, Friction Drive, Display Condition
A vivid example of 1960s Japanese tinplate toy manufacturing. This ambulance is modelled on the wide-bodied Cadillac-style station wagons used as ambulances in the United States during the period, finished in white with bold red Ambulance lettering, red cross panels, blue stripe and bell lithography, and a detailed pressed-in grille and bumper to front and rear.
Japanese tin toy manufacturers of this era were world-renowned for the quality and ambition of their lithographic work, and this ambulance illustrates that reputation well — the all-over decoration includes printed window frames with interior dashboard detail, door handle and lock graphics, bonnet detailing with blue medical stripe, and roof signage complete with flashing light representations. The Made in Japan marking is clearly printed to the rear windscreen area.
The friction drive mechanism to the rear wheels is no longer functioning, making this piece best suited as a display item. The body is structurally sound with honest paint wear and surface marks consistent with its age. All four rubber tyres are present. The lithography remains bright and detailed throughout.
A striking display piece for a shelf, desk, or vintage toy collection.
Condition: Display condition. Friction mechanism non-functioning. Honest paint wear. Lithography bright. Sold as seen.
