Vintage JBP Products No.5 Tinplate Streamlined Racing Car — Made in England, 1950s, JBP 501
A spectacular example of British tinplate lithography at its most exuberant. This JBP Products streamlined racing car — model number JBP 501, racing number 5 — was made in England in the 1950s and combines a pressed steel body with vivid red, yellow and blue lithography in a form that owes much to the streamlined record-breakers and Grand Prix racers that captured the British public’s imagination in the pre-war years.
The car is a single pressed steel shell with detailed all-over lithography including speed lines, a cockpit with the driver identified as Jepson, exhaust vents, and a front grille, finished in the bold primary colour palette that defines the best British tin toys of the period. The JBP 501 registration plate is printed to the front. The Made in England marking is clearly present on the body. Four simple wheels are fitted to pressed axles on the underside.
JBP Products were a small specialist British tin toy manufacturer whose streamlined racing cars are now collected for the quality and ambition of their lithographic design. This example is in honest played-with condition with wear and paint loss consistent with its age, but the lithography remains vivid and the form is completely intact.
Dimensions: 15cm long
