Vintage Wells-Brimtoy 1950s Tinplate Clockwork Flatbed Truck — Red & Green, Working Wind-Up, British
A genuine example of British tin toy manufacturing at its most robust. This 1950s Wells-Brimtoy clockwork flatbed truck combines a pressed red steel cab and chassis with a lithographed green and yellow flatbed body, decorated with printed side-rail and bracket details in the bold, confident graphic style that characterises the best British tinplate of the period.
Wells-Brimtoy was formed in 1932 through the merger of A. Wells & Company and Brimtoy Ltd, operating from Walthamstow, East London, and producing a wide range of clockwork tinplate vehicles, trains, and novelty toys until the company ceased production in 1965. Their commercial vehicle range — lorries, buses, vans and trucks — represents some of the most collectible British tin toys of the post-war period.
The clockwork wire drive mechanism is the outstanding feature of this truck, and is fully exposed and visible on the underside — a beautiful piece of miniature mechanical engineering characteristic of Wells-Brimtoy’s construction method. The original rubber tyres are present on all four wheels and all axles are intact.
Condition is honest and played-with, with significant paint loss to the cab front and sides consistent with decades of enthusiastic use. The lithography on the flatbed body remains bright and detailed. The clockwork mechanism appears structurally intact; functionality has not been tested and the toy is sold as seen.
